First Nations makeup artist Ashlei (Ash) Major is gaining deserved recognition for her detailed beauty tutorials. With a significant social media presence on both TikTok and Instagram, Major’s fame has surged thanks to her engaging makeup tutorials.
A proud Waluwarra and Greek makeup artist, Major’s growth on social media has been organic. “Make-up is my creative outlet. It’s my self-expression,” she says, attributing her social media success to the domino effect of her creative work.
Major, who studied makeup artistry at the Huxley School of Make-up on the Gold Coast, saw her career take off after one of her TikTok videos went viral. “I created a makeup look that paid homage to my nan, who passed away in early 2020. That look went viral, and I saw a lot of First Nations individuals appreciating my creativity and cultural representation on platforms like TikTok.”
Major is passionate about increasing representation for First Nations people in the beauty industry. “There needs to be more representation of First Nations people in the beauty industry,” she asserts. She believes that just as the fashion industry has embraced diverse body types, the beauty industry can similarly embrace First Nations models, hair artists, makeup artists, and stylists.
Hoping to inspire both beauty enthusiasts and First Nations creatives, Major emphasizes the importance of pride in one’s identity and culture. “Don’t be ashamed. Be proud of who you are. We have a unique and rich culture, and it’s important to show that.”
Looking to the future, Major is eager to continue growing in her makeup artistry career, pushing beyond her comfort zone, and advocating for greater representation. “I love what I do because I am proud of who I am. Representation starts with us, and I hope to inspire others to follow their passions.”
