The third phase of Operation Soundarya, initiated by the State Drugs Control department to curb the sale of counterfeit and substandard cosmetics, has resulted in the seizure of cosmetic products worth ₹1.5 lakh. The operation, which targeted over 101 outlets, uncovered a range of products failing to meet quality standards.
Health Minister Veena George announced that legal action has been taken against 12 companies involved in manufacturing and distributing cosmetic products that do not comply with the Cosmetics Rules 2020. Several of these companies were found to be operating without the necessary licenses for manufacturing cosmetics.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Drugs Control officials collected 59 product samples for laboratory analysis. The seized items included a variety of cosmetic products such as lipsticks, face creams, baby powders, baby soaps, and baby oils.
Minister George assured the public that strict measures would be enforced against those found guilty of selling substandard products. The results of the lab tests are eagerly awaited to confirm the extent of the violations.
Earlier phases of Operation Soundarya had revealed that many cosmetic products in the market contained harmful chemicals, with some face creams and lipsticks found to have dangerously high mercury levels. These substances pose serious health risks, including potential damage to internal organs with regular use.
